PHYSICAL THEATRE WORKSHOP FROM MAXIM GORKI THEATER BERLIN
Trainer: Mazlum Nergiz
“One step further!”
Theatre as an artistic and collective practice has the strength to recognize and challenge power dynamics and to, at least, formulate alternative visions of community. It can help everybody, the production team as well as the audience, to take time for the reflection of social problems and to create a process of responsibility regarding the own position in society. In today’s Europe, the question of who is allowed to stay and participate in society is due to the so-called „refugee crisis“ still heatedly discussed in politics and media. What is clear though is that everybody needs a certain knowledge of what it means to live together with people from different local, social and emotional backgrounds regardless of nationality.
This basic theatre education workshop will focus on a variety of exercises dealing with the question of how groups, on the one side, can be formed and what possible problems might occur and, on the other side, it will deal with social justice issues trying to raise the question of privileges in terms of nationality, race and gender and the reflection of one’s own position in society. The single elements of this workshop should conclude into a first sense of the dramatic experience of political theatre.
This will happen through bodily exercises, small improvisations and discussions. Therefore, a certain level of English —being able to understand and communicate thoughts and emotions—, a small theatrical experience and a general willingness to share stories with a group and to be open-minded about other people is required.
